Millstones or mill stones are stones used in grist mills, for grinding wheat or other grains.
Millstones come in pairs. The base or bedstone is stationary. Above the bedstone is the turning runner stone which actually does the grinding. The runner stone spins above the stationary bedstone creating the "scissoring" or grinding action of the stones. A runner stone is generally slightly concave, while the bedstone is slightly convex. This helps to channel the ground flour to the outer edges of the stones where it can be gathered up.
The runner stone is supported by a cross-shaped metal piece (rind or rynd) fixed to a "mace head" topping the main shaft or spindle leading to the driving mechanism of the mill (wind, water (including tide) or other means).
Neolithic and Upper Paleolithic people used millstones to grind grains, nuts, rhizomes and other vegetable food products for consumption. These implements are often called grinding stones. They used either staddle stones or rotary querns turned by hand. Such devices were also used to grind pigments and metal ores prior to smelting.
Blues is a genre and musical form that originated in African-American communities in the "Deep South" of the United States around the end of the 19th century. The genre developed from roots in traditional African music, combined with European American folk music. Blues incorporated spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts, and chants, and rhymed simple narrative ballads. The blues form, ubiquitous in jazz, rhythm and blues and rock and roll, is characterized by the call-and-response pattern, the blues scale and specific chord progressions, of which the twelve-bar blues is the most common. The blue notes (or "worried notes") which are often thirds or fifths which are flatter in pitch than in other music styles, are also an important part of the sound. Blues shuffles or walking bass reinforce the trance-like rhythm and form a repetitive effect called a groove.
Blues as a genre possesses other characteristics such as lyrics, bass lines, and instruments. The lyrics of early traditional blues verses consisted of a single line repeated four times. It was only in the first decades of the 20th century that the most common current structure became standard: the so-called AAB pattern, consisting of a line sung over the four first bars, its repetition over the next four, and then a longer concluding line over the last bars. Early blues frequently took the form of a loose narrative, often relating troubles experienced within African American society.
Millstone Blues, once written during a spontaneous recording session in May 2007, contains some autobiographical elements and has set a cornerstone for the following Noise Tales recordings. The song was released on 1-bit-Wonder under the synonym "Gary West" where LGM 97 drummer "Funky Lothar" contributed his percussion play. A visit from singer Karin Huebler with Sandro W. et al. during the recordings led to the background vocals. The video was shot 2013 in California with a cell phone camera. The external material was taken from "Mark of the Whole Meat (1964)" by U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, Motion Picture Service and "How Textile Mills Are Modernizing (1948)" by Wolff (Raphael G.) Studios. Both films are subject of Public Domain and were available at archive.org. The song is licensed unde...

Millstone Grit are an international rock trio, occasionally playing acoustic sets, who perform original songs based in Portland Oregon, and formally in Busan, South Korea. Millstone Grit's music has been featured on CNN, KMUZ Radio, Busan eFM Radio, Damn Sight Radio Busan and Korean Homesick Blues. Busan Haps talks Millstone Grit: "Millstone Grit kicked off the evening with a set of all original songs composed by the budding high school rockers. Watching them shred onstage and react to the audience members dancing recalled memories of garage bands back in the day - when dreams of stardom... were less-clouded by the daily grind." - 2010. "Next was Millstone Grit: the hardest working band in Busan right now. They have been on the scene for a couple years now and have steadily improved. I...
